The Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP), launched by the U.S. government between 1938 and 1944, was initially designed to increase the number of civilian pilots. Major airlines have begun relaxing traditional entry requirements such as the need for four-year degrees and are opening recruitment to a wider pool of passionate candidates.

A remarkable example is United Airlines’ Aviate Academy (UAA), the first U.S. airline-owned and operated flight school. Since its launch in 2021, UAA has received over 30,000 applications, with its first graduating class of 51 pilots 80% of whom were women and people of color showcasing the industry’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Located in Goodyear, Arizona, UAA offers a one-year training program where graduates qualify as certified flight instructors. From there, students continue a 5–6 year journey of building flight hours and advanced certifications before joining United Airlines as commercial pilots. According to Dana Donati, CEO of UAA, the academy’s mission is not to replace aviation degrees but to provide the best training environment for student success.
This vision is echoed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which in 2022 allocated $5 million to support aviation education in U.S. high schools nurturing the next generation of aviators from an early age. The FAA’s approach highlights a critical balance: encouraging new pathways into aviation while ensuring pilots maintain the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
